His style and ideology have influenced me, particularly his cynical and sardonic view of humanity. He is a master writer whose works are very readable and contemporary.
Bel-Ami – Reviewed on Amazon: 15th January 2013 Bel Ami is set in the 19th Century and is largely a sardonic social commentary on the corrupt nature of French society particularly the wealthy classes. Although this dark story doesn’t have a tragic ending it is grim and emphasises humanity as immoral and self-serving. The protagonist, Georges du Roy, of humble background triumphs but remains a profoundly ambiguous character. Don’t be afraid to watch the film it is much more than a costume drama and doesn’t measure up to the failings movie reviewers claimed.
